Whisper House Press—From the Editor’s Desk, #15

Notes from the desk of the editor are offered in the interests of personal posterity and transparency for writers and other potential editors who wish to learn from my experience.

Author interviews have gone splendidly so far! I’ve done seventeen of twenty-four or so planned discussions.

Here’s a draft of one of the edited interviews—this with contributing author Tyler Kasishke. It’s pretty much where we want it to be (despite my commitment to transparency, I would never share something I judged put a contributor in a position that person wouldn’t like), but I’m working with an intern to dial in our pattern that we’ll use for every video. Check this one out for an idea of where these things should land. It’s not going on the youtube channel until we start marketing in the fall for this project (which will release a year afterward).

Speaking of interns, I’ve got one now for Whisper House Press. The school where I work has a pretty robust transition program (think: transition from high school to the workplace or whatever’s next), and offering internships and job opportunities is something they do pretty regularly. When I put two and two together, I figured I might have a way of giving back in Whisper House Press. The assumption there was that a potential intern wouldn’t be doing any task I wouldn’t need to redo, so I thought of it truly as a service to the community and hoped that the service wouldn’t cost me too much in terms of nonproductive time. As it turns out, the person I selected is really talented in their own right, so I’m excited to task that person with video editing that I’m just checking on and conferring about. This, and they’ll get some exposure to publishing and a new look at the writing process. I hope the opportunity is helpful to that person. (After they turn 18 and if they wish, they’ll be thanked publicly.)

Of our thirty-five included stories, I’m about a dozen or so pieces into editorial notes. I’m amazed at how good these things are, and I’m excited that they’ll be brought to the public in due time.

That’s it for now! Keep writing and submitting.
