“Mundane horror for the people.”

From the Editor’s Desk, #18

Notes from the desk of the editor are offered in the interests of personal posterity and transparency for writers and other potential editors who wish to learn from my experience

We are so close!

Only two more stories to go for prepping for text pour (read about that here). In fact, I’ve been arranging stories in my book design software as they’ve become ready, and I’m excited to slot in these last two items!

With my editor’s note, we’re at about 72k words. The collection and notes together will likely top out just shy of 80,000 words.

One thing I’ve been careful about is not to bug authors too much while still trying to maintain some hold of deadlines. They are all contracted to return edits inside ten days, if I remember right, but I’m trying to be realistic and helpful / accommodating. I try not to bug people more than once per week and to keep it positive every time I reach out.

This kind of communication is always tricky for me because I nearly always respond to stuff on my own stories within 24 hours, but I’m a maniac who shouldn’t be trusted to evaluate others’ “get up and go” drives. I try hard to set the knob in my brain to “normal human” before sending off emails prodding people do get on their edits.

In any case, I’ll bet we’ll be done in the next week and I can think more carefully about the final layouts. Then I’ll develop the digital proof for me and for contributing authors to review in full. Then… then the video interviews we’ve made will be going live over on our youtube channel (please subscribe for updates), and I’ll create a page on this website for all contributing authors’ introductions.

In the meantime, I’m in Europe and not only seeing a lot of cool stuff but getting writing of my own done. This is a work + research + bonding trip for dad and kid, and we’ve been knocking it out of the park on all fronts.

Oh, and if you didn’t know, you can subscribe to this website for updates, and I also send out a newsletter maybe once per month with author/editor updates. I’d love to have your participation in both!
