Writing Classes From Capone

I teach writing for a my day job as a high school English teacher and have taught academic as well as creative writing for the last 17 years. I’m working to get myself into teaching at Utah’s state prison, but there aren’t enough folks interested in the same to really get it off the ground. Contact the LUW president if you are interested in participating in this effort.

I also give frequent talks on writing.

If you’re looking for a presentation, I’ve given or have prepared talks on the following and can pull them out of my pocket on demand (I can also build new ones for your group—I love to share what I’m learning):

(1) Using Historical Research in Writing Your Novel (presented at Utah Council for the Social Studies 2024 and for the Utah State Board of Education teacher education program in April 2024; presented at 2023 LUW Pre Quills Writing Conference and at two LUW Chapters in 2023)

(2) Where Do Writers Get Their Ideas?

(3) From Ideation to Outline: The First Steps in Writing Your Story

(4) Writing to Publish: Crafting Your Anthology Submission and Finding Paying Markets

(5) Writing Believable Characters in Recovery from Addiction

(6) Genres: An Introduction

(7) The Editing / Selection Process: A Publisher’s View

Writing organizations of which I am a member:

(1) The League of Utah Writers, Salt City Genre Writers and Screenwriters Guild chapters.

(2) Horror Writers Association (professional organization for horror writers, votes on the Bram Stoker award!) affiliate member (that means I’m an early professional with a history of paid publications) national and state chapter
