“Mundane horror for the people.”

Today marks 25 years of continuous abstinence from drugs (including the drug alcohol) and 25 years of continuous recovery from addiction. Treating this condition requires my concern and attention every day, every week, every month… and it’s brought me a life beyond imagining.

Those of you who’ve known me for a long time know that writing creatively for pay was something I always wanted but never really understood or thought I could do, but here I am. I’m also running my own small publishing business, an extension of this lifelong dream.

The most important gift I’ve received is the freedom to choose what to do with my life — from the “with whom should I associate?” to the “what should I do today?” questions all the way up to the ones about family and business and money and — most importantly — time.

I am grateful for my incredibly good luck, for without it, I might not be (or have been) so willing to follow instructions when it counted (and when it counts) most. I do not take credit for these choices or the willingness that made them possible. I am a product of excellent luck, and I hope never to forget that truth.

Thank you to my family and to my twelve-step recovery community for saving my life repeatedly.

If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, you can talk to me. And if I’m not the right person for you, I can help you find someone else to talk to. There is a way up and a way out of the darkness.
