From the Editor’s Desk #40: What Authors Say About Working With Steve at Whisper House Press

Notes from the desk of the editor are offered in the interests of personal posterity and transparency for writers and other potential editors who wish to learn from my experience.

– the editor

I used a form to gather perspectives from authors working with me for inclusion in the Costs of Living and Dread Mondays anthologies, and here’s what they had to say.

The following are what I’ll dub Testimonials from Contracted Authors (all direct quotes with author permission):

With my work in a wide variety of journals and anthologies, WHP is a clear standout. Not that other experiences have been disappointing — WHP has simply been remarkably different. Professional, yes — but at the same time, clearly Stephen is curating with a strong sense that he is collaborating with colleague writers. Most of these writers, like me, probably didn’t know Stephen until our work was accepted. It’s an absolute pleasure to be kept informed of, and engaged with, the editorial process along each step of the journey.

I think [Steve is] very accommodating and kind. [He has] an incredible talent for what you are doing at Whisper House Press and I am very lucky to be a part of it.

Working with Whisper House Press and Steve has been a pleasure. He is not only a great editor who gave me the opportunity to really evaluate my work, but he has kept all the contributors apprised and informed every step of the way. It has really made me feel like I’m a part of the process, rather than just an author who sold a story to him.

Steve Capone is a consummate professional and a joy to work with. He makes sure every author has an opportunity to work one on one with him as he polishes every story to perfection.

Working with WHP has been incredibly smooth from a writer’s standpoint, and contributors have been kept informed of the project’s progress to an extraordinary degree.

Working with WHP has been a delight from start to finish. Friendly, professional and considerate throughout. I hope they publish more of my stories!

Steve is professional and responsive. It has been great working with him so far on these two anthologies and I hope to work with him again.

Steve is professional, straightforward, and a great communicator. It has been a pleasure to work with Whisper House Press.

WHP is an excellent company for writers with solid communication and a helpful editing process.

It’s my first time embarking on a voyage like this, and since the moment I was invited aboard, I’ve felt fairly safe in Steve’s hands. He appears to be a good pilot, captain and navigator, using soothing tones when required, and not panicking when any large fins (or icebergs) appear up ahead. I feel honoured to be included amongst the vampiric band of scribblers he’s assembled for this blood-filled odyssey, and I’m looking forward to tackling the waters that lie ahead – be they calm, choppy or full of corpses . . . or a beguiling combination of all three!

Working with WHP has been a pleasure. Stephen is kind, professional, and enthusiastic. His ultimate goal, as with all of us, is to publish things that get more cool stories into the hands of readers, and do so in an ethical and transparent way.

One can expect thoughtful and thorough editing of their piece, a transparent picture of the publishing process, and a commitment to promote the final product. It was a pleasure to work with WHP, and I hope to do so again in the future.

Working with [Whisper House Press] has been a delight! From the call for submissions to the Kickstarter, and not forgetting Steve’s unwavering enthusiasm and positivity, it has been one of the best experiences that I’ve had with publishing my work.

I am so grateful to be part of a Whisper House Press anthology! The other authors are all incredible, and working with Steve has been a true joy. I’m excited to see our collective work out in the world!

Whisper House Press has made my first print publishing experience a really positive one. There was such clear transparency throughout every step of the process, and Steve went out of his way to provide authors with lots of helpful resources. As a queer writer, I also very much appreciated the extended deadline for writers from historically marginalized communities. Highly recommend working with Whisper House Press!

I’m thrilled to share my twisted little story with the world by publishing with this Whisper House Press anthology! I love working with such a delightful rising voice in the world of horror publishing. I was especially delighted to see that WHP is also based in Utah, I love making my home state a little spookier together!

WHP has been incredibly communicative and a delight to work with. Stephen Capone Jr is both thoughtful and professional. I feel like I’ve been kept in the loop in all stages in this process. As an author who has seen and heard many scary publishing stories, I’m grateful to collaborate with WHP.

I’ll just quote what’s already on my blog (https://meschera.blogspot.com/2024/12/end-of-year-report-part-1.html): “Having met him on screen, I like the chief Whisperer Steve Capone and what he’s trying to do, and wish him and Whisper House Press well.”

I’ve been extremely impressed with Steve’s communication and professionalism and the care he puts into the whole publishing process. He clearly has a passion for his projects and you can’t help but feel excited to be a part of it.

WHP has been a delight to work with from the start. Steve Capone Jr. has a great attention to detail and seems to have a streamlined process that would make you think he’s been running the press for decades.

Steve is awesome! I love working with him and this book has such a great cast of characters. I’ve fallen in love with each and every story.

I’ve never worked so closely with an editor, despite having had seven short stories published in the past. This was a treat and a half!

The process from submission to publication was transparent, and the feedback on my piece constructive. I hope to work with them again.

This is my first inclusion in an anthology, and if they are all run like this one, there’s a very bright future ahead.

Whisper House Publishing is polite, timely, and transparent. I look forward to working with them again.

Writing for WHP is the right combination of professional and down to earth accessible. It’s been fun.

It’s been a pleasure working with a publisher as transparent and professional as Steve and WHP.

So far, it’s been a breeze. I appreciate [Steve’s] attention to detail and focus on communication

Steve is very easy to work with and keeps things on schedule.

Communication has been prompt, concise, and thorough. It’s been a pleasure to look for updates in my inbox. I enjoy the collaboration between [Whisper House Press] and the anthology’s authors.

I have found [Steve] to be the most transparent, communicative, and caring editor I have worked with. Updates are appreciated and only sent when necessary and if they require any action on the author’s part, they are thoughtful and for the good of contributors and/or the book. Honestly, it’s been a great experience that feels thoughtful and organized.
